Aims and benefits

The treatment of mental illness in refugees presents a variety of linguistic and cultural challenges, which often result in a gap in care for those affected.

The "RELATER" network has therefore set itself the goal of breaking down communication barriers in the care of refugees with mental illnesses. A newly developed mobile app is being tested in a large clinical trial. This should make it possible to conduct a diagnostic interview with Arabic-speaking people (possibly with dialect). Results obtained using the app will be compared to results based on interviews with translators. In addition, a smartphone-based platform for patient-therapist contacts will be developed. This will enable mutual exchange and make it possible to survey the users' current mental state in their everyday lives.

If the developed and tested mobile apps prove to be useful, the software can be disseminated nationwide to support the care of refugees. In this way, the project will serve to improve the treatment of patients from those language groups that are currently most widespread among refugees.
